"Generously illustrated with both black-and-white and color photos, with copious end notes and bibliography, this book will become a useful reference for future students of Lynchburg and Central Virginia. Its style is lively and engaging, and the general public will find much to learn within its pages."
- Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol. 113, No. 1 (2005)
The author states:
Although this history follows the customary chronological order, its emphasis is on the many notable and colorful citizens who lived in our city from its founding to its bicentennial. To give the reader an opportunity to learn more about a particularly interesting or important person or event without interrupting the book's narrative, I have inserted "cameos" describing them in some detail after each of the thirty chapters, except the last.
Writing history is an art, not a science. Historical objectivity is ultimately a judgment of the reader. Fortunately, Lynchburg has produced some excellent memoirs, often created not long after the events they describe by those who were present and knew the people involved. Whenever possible, I have allowed our citizens to speak for themselves through their own writings or quotations. This book is not just a written record of Lynchburg's first two centuries. Many of the 138 black and white drawings and photographs and the eight pages in color by local artists have not appeared in previous books or articles about the Hill City. Sometimes a picture is indeed worth a thousand words.
