Back Cover

This book contains the existing records of all of Henry’s speeches not previously available from a single source, and those portions of his correspondence that the compiler believes are most important to an understanding of Henry the patriot and Henry the man.

Extended memoirs of Henry are published here in full for the first time in one place by Colonel Samuel Meredith, his brother-in-law; Judge Edmund Winston, Henry’s first cousin (who married his widow); and most importantly, Judge Spencer Roane, Henry’s son-in-law, who, after Henry’s death, became the chief judge of what was then Virginia’s supreme court.

The book also contains extended reminiscences or evaluations of Henry by George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, George Mason, Edmund Randolph, John Marshall and many others who knew him or encountered his mesmerizing oratory. Except for the extended memoirs, which appear in the prologue and epilogue or as appendices, the book’s content is presented chronologically.

Although it is not intended to be a complete biography, the format enables the reader to place the material in the context of the Voice of American Liberty’s life and works.
